Mina's Story
Hope in Action
Mina was a hard-working young woman who wanted to further her career and education. She met Joe through mutual friends, and the pair were originally inseparable.
Mina found out she was pregnant about four months into the relationship. Around that time Joe started showing another side of himself. He became increasingly jealous and would belittle her. Over time Joe’s obsession with Mina and control turned scarier as he isolated her from her family and friends.
Mina broke up with Joe in the beginning of 2025 after being subjected to his love bombing, jealousy, and alcoholism. Joe refused to accept the break up and continued to harass and torture her.
Joe would show up to her job daily and refused to pay child support. He also took advantage of visitation with their son to further intimidate Mina. One night Joe broke into Mina’s home and sexually assaulted her. The next day she obtained a Temporary Restraining Order. Mina was traumatized by the assault.
Mina contacted Center for Hope & Safety’s Legal department. An attorney reviewed all evidence and amended the restraining order complaint to include all relevant incidents. The attorney also prepped Mina for direct examination and cross examination.
Mina wanted to move with her family to Idaho for a lower cost of living, as she would otherwise be homeless. However, Joe refused to allow their son to relocate. Mina was essentially trapped in a state where she could not afford to live and without any financial support. Our attorney explained that Mina could negotiate a different order of protection, in exchange for Joe giving permission for their son to relocate to Idaho with her.
Joe outright refused the request at first. Our attorney then presented Joe with the evidence and amended complaint, and impressed on him that a judge would most likely grant her request.
Eventually, Joe became open to settling the case. He signed an agreement giving Mina custody of their son and the right to relocate.
Mina was grateful for this outcome and the opportunity to live safely with her son and family in Idaho. She was not aware relocation was a possibility until discussing her options with us. Mina is now safe with her son and rebuilding her life thanks to the support she received from Center for Hope & Safety.
